about

I met Felix over brunch one morning in Hong Kong a few years ago. I was never skilled in the art of day trading, and we had a very in depth conversation about investments and new trading strategies he had developed at his firm. During my mid 30s I had delved into a lot of swing trading and could never muster up the courage to go fully into day trading. He talked a lot about human nature and how we are all rooted in one of the 5 elements of ancient Chinese alchemy. To understand these five basic traits in business was rudimentary, he explained. He described it as a contemporary look at The Art of War, the novella by Sun Tzu, as well as a more in depth concept of the five Shen, known as the five spirits which embodies the human spirit. Before uploading his album I asked him if I could incorporate a summary of his philosophy with the album description and he graciously accepted. Here is the run down, of which he wishes to create into a book at some point in his life.

Fire:
Fire is an independent element. The hardest to control as a human, but it is the driving force of all vision and pursuit of the common individual. Fire is connected to the heart, and it must constantly be fueled in order to give us our movement and kinetic power. It can equally be destructive, as it is constructive. It heats up our homes, and destroys the old which has solidified. It is synonymous with energy of the youth. Chaotic, restless, seeking to destroy that which is tradition. It favours the new, over the old. Despite it's high energy, it is also naive, and is easily seen from trees above. Taming the fire, has been the first goal of human development since the dawn of higher intellect.

Water:
Water is more ingrained within the Godlier aspects of this world. It is synonymous with the Kidneys, which control our fluids and filters them. It acts as a mirror against fire, which doesn't destroy it, but simply dances with it. It is one that is constantly fighting and working with the flame to uphold balance. Water flows beyond human control, and it does not need humans to tame it. We are dependent off the element, and it will control us without us asking for it. It will keep us on path of what is right, and what is rational. It does not ask favours from us, but it is always there for us to follow.

Earth:
Earth is the center piece of all the five elements. It does not move, does not fuel, and does not ask. It simply acts like glue which holds every element in its place for where it needs to go. Synonymous with the spleen, or stomach, it acts as the anchor for our digestion. Without earth, the other elements are divided, essentially useless. To be in touch with earth is to be nonbeing. Earth is patient, it waits for the world to be built around it. It does not flow like the rest of elements, it simply stays until its time to be taken.

Metal:
Metal is an interesting element. It is separate from many aspects of the other four elements in that it is simply used to create power. It is the fuel and protection of our world. It reflects energy, and keeps it stored. Synonymous with the lungs, it is often confused as being the "Air" element in most new age philosophy, but this is not the case. Air is the foundation of God, and we cannot imagine to be apart of it, for we only live off it unable to predict where it may go, but Metal is always there for us living to use it. It relies on instinct, and survival. It is the foundation of wealth, and of human stability. It is easily corrupted, it can be used purely for good, or purely for evil, but unlike fire, it does not need fuel to stay alive, as it is always in existence and never ceasing to dissipate. It does not live independently, it needs humans to control it and let it move. It is also why it is often related directly to the seven deadly sins, as well as the seven virtues. As it is purely rooted in the depths of this earth, it is fuel for plants, trees. For without the metals, they cannot grow strong. Without plants, life would not exist. So we are all rooted in the metal world.

Wood:
Wood is the element of wisdom. It has been here since before we have existed, and is alive in the most literal sense of the term. It is a free flowing spirit which aims to shield us, and provide us with knowledge. Our books printed on the same element, as well as our shelters. To be in touch with the wood element is to understand history, and to predict the patterns of our living breathing world. Synonymous with the liver, it is used to detoxify our body and build protein in the bloodstream. It is the passed on wisdom, that helps us find our path, and to control our lives for the greater good. To fuel the fire, follow the water, utilize the earth, and absorb the metals. In the end however, all wood must burn. For there must always be a new path to explore.
